@sys admin

Of course I'm entitled to my own intellectual property. IP rights are a fundamental incentive for innovation.

Consider for a moment that I was working on this problem well over 1 year ago before the app store launched and when this was groundbreaking.

Regarding the "Radio" app, I had a look. For most end users this effectively solves the problem. Kudos to the developers and their launch in December.

However, the "Radio" app doesn't address the developers' problem of general-purpose stream conversion. For example, it doesn't accommodate non-shoutcast.com registered IceCast streams, nor does it support video. There is still value in a library for implementing a mobile streaming/transcoding proxy.

I find your attitude really selfish. First you announce that you have a solution, then you decide to hoard your trivial discovery and hold out the prospect of developing it commercially. Then you're too lazy to even develop it yourself but presumably want to be a parasite and profit from someone else doing the heavy lifting. I hope that the next time you need help no one helps you.

By the way if anyone is reading this you can achieve the same effect by downloading the "Radio" app from the app store for $0.99

Hi. This is really cool. I am trying to find a way to get live BBC Radio streams to work on the iPhone ... this looks like a solution, maybe? This could be a really interesting app, would be great if you could stream any audio from your Mac to your iPhone over the internet. Maybe some way to remote control the Mac to fire up iTunes or some streaming radio etc... Mmmm What do you think?

Hi Stephen,

You didn't miss the post -- I still haven't given technical details on how to do live streaming to iPod/iPhone because I'm considering developing/launching a commercial or ad-supported service.

Maybe I'll give up on this idea soon though, I really have way too much on my plate right now. If there are any iPod/iPhone app developers reading this and interested in building a general-purpose audio/video streaming app drop me a line!

Hi Allen,

You said you would have a post explaining how you made this happen, and I would love to know. There are a number of different radio stations I would love to be able to listen to while doing things around the house, via my ipod touch.
Did I miss this post?

Hi Guys,

I'll do a write-up shortly. I'm in the middle of writing my PhD dissertation right now.

@Prune
The 206 HTTP response code means "partial content" in response to a range request. It's not an error, it's more similar to a 200 OK.

Allen: I like it. I suppose Apple has reasons for not supporting streaming audio, but since the iTouch is a dandy little portable computer, it's a surprise that they wouldn't, as it adds value to the iTouch.

Anyway, I'd like to see more on how to do this.
